With warm weather approaching, an increase with outdoor activity will take place. More people will be walking and there will be more movement with driving. Here are some tips that can help.
Walking: Be aware of your surroundings. Use well populated and well lighted streets. Use sidewalks and move with confidence. If along a road, walk facing traffic. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable users of the road. Obey traffic control devices. Should a motorist bother you, reverse your walking direction. If you carry a wallet or purse place the wallet in a front pocket and a purse under your arm. Don’t be distracted such as with the use of a cell phone. If attacked, scream or yell, make noise, such as yelling fire
which draws attention. Let your valuables go, they are replaceable.
Driving: Keep valuables secured in the trunk and not next to you. Put a purse on the floor of the car. Keep doors locked. When stopped in traffic, leave distance between you and the car in front for an escape route with the car. Never drive with an almost empty tank. Keep windows up except for a small opening for ventilation. If followed, head to the nearest police department or fire house or open store. If someone attempts to force you off the road, try to remain calm and blow your horn constantly. When approaching your parked car, scan the area and have your keys or remote ready. View the inside of car before getting in. If something looks “funny” just walk away quickly. It is a good idea to always have a cell phone
available.
Remember the key elements of prevention: Awareness, Trusting Instincts, Eliminating Opportunities, and Preparedness.
