There are more than 3,400 deaths each year due to fires. An overwhelming number of fires occur in the home. By prevention planning, the dangers can be reduced greatly. The most effective way is to identify and remove fire hazards. Here are some general safety tips.

  1. Every home should have one or more working smoke alarms. A working smoke alarm has been said to double your chances of survival. Test it monthly and replace the battery at least once a year.
  2. Do not over load electric circuit or extension cords. Do not place cords under rugs. Immediately unplug any appliance that sputter, spark, smell, or cause any concern and have them professionally checked.
  3. When using appliances, follow the manufactures safety precautions. Unplug appliances when not in use. Use safety caps to cover unused electrical outlets, especially when there are small children in the home.
  4. Portable heaters if used, need a large space and stability. Keep anything combustible away. If a kerosene heater is used, keep good ventilation in the room and only refill outside.
  5. If using a fireplace, use a fire screen and keep the chimney cleaned annually. Never leave any burning devices unattended such as fireplaces, lanterns, and candles.
  6. Keep matches, lighters, lighter fluids, and other ignition devices and combustible substances in a safe place and away from children.
  7. Plan your escape. Instruct children and family members about the “what ifs” of a fire. Have a safety plan on how to get out of the house, where to meet, what to do, and how to call for help. “PRACTICE THE PLAN” by role playing. Every second counts.
  8. Contact your local fire department officials for further information and answers to questions concerning fire safety. The community has a great fire department with individuals ready to help.
  9. During holidays, the use of decorative lights, electrical cords, candles and other potential fire hazards will increase. Be safe in your usage and follow direction on how to use to keep safe.
